A close friend of colonial patriot Dr. Joseph Warren, physician Elisha Story was sympathetic to the Sons of Liberty movement. He became one of the only doctors to participate in the “destruction of the tea” on Griffin’s Wharf on December 16, 1773.
During the Revolutionary War, Dr. Story served as a company surgeon. In 1775, during the Battle of Bunker Hill, he fought alongside Warren for a short time before being compelled to aid a wounded friend move to nearby Winter Hill. Story was therefore not present for the unfortunate death of his friend and colleague, Dr. Warren. Story served under George Washington for a time but resigned in 1777 in protest over the mismanagement of the medical department. When back in Massachusetts, Story helped manage an outbreak of smallpox that devastated the neighboring communities around Marblehead. Once the outbreak subsided, Dr. Story settled in the town permanently.
Elisha Story died in Marblehead, Massachusetts, on March 27, 1805, and is buried in Marblehead’s Green Street Cemetery.
