A 20-year-old yeoman from Gloucester, Massachusetts, little more is known about the early life of George Sayward aside from his alleged participation in the Boston Tea Party.
What is known is that during the Revolutionary War, Sayward served in Captain William Ellery’s First Artillery Company from July 1776 to April 1777. That company was stationed at Gloucester, Massachusetts, and charged with defending the seacoast from possible invasions by British troops.
After the war, Sayward and his family moved to Thomaston, Maine. He died on May 9, 1836, in Union, Maine, though his burial place is unknown.
